History

The Department of Surgery is one of the dynamic Departments of University of Ghana Medical School and hosted at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital which is the premier Teaching Hospital in Ghana and established in 1927. 

The Department of Surgery as a teaching unit commenced with the establishment of the University of Ghana Medical School in 1965. 

The Head of Department is Prof Mathew Kwame Yamoah Kyei, A consultant Urologist. 

Students Undergraduate 

The Department offers training for medical students leading to the award of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB).

Research 

The department is involved in research activities and open for international collaborations on research on epidemiology, clinical features, investigations and management out comes. Genetics aspects of disease causation are also welcomed.  
Current collaborative research includes the INTERCEPT study, collaboration with Cambridge University in vascular and trauma surgery, collaborations on the management of breast diseases and genomics of prostate cancer.  
Implementing a hospital-based continuous patient monitoring system using consumer wearable devices in Ghana is a collaborative study with University of Alabama at Birmingham.

 Services 

The main Surgical block is organized in units sub specializing in Breast diseases, hepatobiliary surgery, colorectal surgery, endocrine surgery and vascular surgery. Each unit also offers services in surgery in General and emergencies. 
Other sub specialties in the department include urology, plastic surgery, Orthopedics and trauma, cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric surgery, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and Neurosurgery 
The departments boost of about 400 beds of the 2000 bed capacity of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. 
Services rendered and form the basis of training include open procedures, endoscopic procedures, laparoscopic procedures and organ transplantation.

The care given at the department is supported by excellent laboratory services and radiology Department that’s is well equipped for cross sectional Imaging including Ct scan and MRIs as well as radionuclide studies

Medical School Electives

The department with its diverse patient population and high numbers as well as expertise in various sub specialties in Surgery, is a good facility for medical students and other students in medical science looking for elective placement and experience. 
The department has hosted 274 Elective students in the past 2 years making it one of the most sought-after departments in the university of Ghana medical school. The countries where the medical students were from included Germany, USA, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Cyprus, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and from the African Continent. 
The medical School offers a complete experience in relation to medical training, accommodation and tourism sites. This is supported by the world acclaimed Ghanaian hospitality. 

Capacity and Support  

The department’s clinical work relies on an extensive setup, utilizing about 400 beds out of 2,000 bed capacity of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The sub specialist includes laboratory, X-ray and theatre.
